Application-specific notes for US DS-160

  • The Department of State describes a square digital image from 600 x 600 through 1200 x 1200 pixels. This preset exports the published 600 x 600 minimum rather than stretching a rectangular passport crop; start from the original photograph and crop equally around the face.
  • The digital file ceiling is 240 KB. That is a maximum, not a requested target, so there is no benefit in inflating a clear smaller JPEG merely to approach the cap. Inspect the final square image after compression and keep the original available if the form asks for a replacement.
  • This record is for the photograph uploaded inside the DS-160 nonimmigrant-visa form. A printed photograph requested for an interview or a different US immigration process is a separate submission step; follow the instructions attached to that route instead of assuming the digital-file rule covers it.
  • The white-background rule and square canvas are independent checks. Replacing the background does not make a rectangular file compliant, and resizing a rectangle to 600 x 600 would distort the face. Crop to a square first, then export within the stated byte ceiling.
