DPI is a label; pixels are the photograph

DPI is a number stored in the file that says how large the image should print. Changing it alone does not add detail, sharpen anything, or make a small photo acceptable — a 300 by 300 pixel image tagged at 300 DPI simply says print me one inch wide. When a form asks for 300 DPI alongside a print size, what it needs in practice is enough pixels to print at that size. Some portals do read the DPI field itself, so check whether yours states a pixel requirement as well.

The relationship is arithmetic: millimetres divided by 25.4, multiplied by DPI, gives pixels. A 35 by 45mm photo at 300 DPI is about 413 by 531 pixels. If your source is smaller than that, raising the DPI tag will satisfy a checker that only reads metadata but will still print soft, because the detail was never captured. Re-tagging is useful when a portal validates the DPI field; it is not a substitute for photographing at a higher resolution.

  • Work out the pixels your print size needs before changing the tag.
  • Do not upscale a small image to reach a pixel count — retake it.
  • Keep the original file in case the portal wants the untouched capture.

Does changing the DPI affect image quality?

No. DPI (dots per inch) is just a metadata tag in the file header that tells a printer or a portal how large to render the image. This tool rewrites only that tag — the actual pixels are left byte-for-byte unchanged, so there is zero quality loss and the file size barely changes.

Why does NSDL PAN ask for 200 DPI?

The NSDL PAN application portal checks the declared DPI in the scanned photo and signature. If the scan was saved at 72 DPI (the browser/phone default), the portal can reject it even when the pixel dimensions are correct. Setting the tag to 200 DPI satisfies that check without re-scanning.

What DPI should I use for printing a passport photo?

300 DPI is the print-shop standard for photo prints. At 300 DPI a 35×45 mm passport photo needs roughly 413×531 pixels. For document scans some portals ask for 200 or 600 DPI — use the custom field if your form specifies a different value.

Does it work on PNG files?

This tool edits the JFIF DPI tag used by JPG files, which is what Indian government portals read. PNG stores resolution differently (a pHYs chunk) and most portals expect JPG anyway. Convert a PNG to JPG with the format converter first, then set its DPI here.
